This morning, I received word that Calvinist blogger Steve Hays died. For a decade, he attacked me online, called me an apostate, even trying to get me fired and disciplined by my church (!). Here are my thoughts on his passing.
Steve Hays
God can save mid-level sinners like me, but not mega-sinners like Stalin
The other day, I posted a couple of tweets listing bad objections to Christian universalism. Here is the second tweet: “The second worst objection to Christian universalism: ‘If everybody is ultimately saved by Jesus, then why bother telling anybody?’ “Um, because it’s the best possible news. And God told us to.” Steve Hays of Triablogue […]
Pelagian Calvinism
Today, Steve Hays posted a response at Triablogue to a comment I posted on my website in the discussion thread for the article “Does Calvinism entail that I might love my child more than God does?” Let’s begin with Hays’ quotation of me: “Imagine a doctor who has enough antidote for an entire population inflicted […]
Steve Hays redefines colorblindness
As you may know, I am currently co-writing a book with atheist John Loftus, a series of short debates on a range of issues that divide us. Loftus blogged about the book this weekend which prompted Steve Hays, a paleo-Calvinist from the seventeenth century who, while pining to be my nemesis, merely serves as comic relief, to post […]
Dawkins vs. Craig in book form
As you know, I’ve had my “issues” with Steve Hays at Triablogue. But if the guy has a good idea then I’ll happily give credit where credit is due. And this is a really good idea. Steve observed that Dawkins has repeatedly refused to debate William Lane Craig. Although Dawkins says it is merely because […]
The moral confusion of Steve Hays
I was happy to see Steve Hays provide some explanation at Triablogue for how I got labeled an “ethical subjectivist”. Unfortunately by offering an explanation he ended up typing himself into a deeper hole. Let’s look at his comments and then consider how deep the hole is: i) For the record, I think I’m the one, not Patrick […]
Patrick Chan of Triablogue defends Randal Rauser with biting satire
As you probably know, the folks at Triablogue are not my biggest fans. But now Patrick Chan has come out and published an absolutely scathing satire which completely takes apart the cynical misinformation of Steve Hays and his epigones. The article is called “Church of Uncertain” and I suggest you take a look so you can […]
On “Bible-haters”
I have been called many things. This week Steve Hays added yet another label: “Bible hater.” The charge came in his article “Bowdlerizing the Bible” published at Triablogue. This would be comical if it weren’t so sad. I accept the plenary inspiration of scripture. I accept meticulous superintending divine providential activity as the primary means […]
If “The Bible is not a children’s book” then why do we have children’s Bibles?
Steve Hays of Triablogue wrote a response to my discussion of teaching biblical genocide to children called “Scout’s Honor!” It includes all the hallmarks of Hays’s critical analysis (or lack thereof) including the claim that I accept the UN as my “moral authority”. (How’s that supposed to work exactly?! “Hmm, has the UN addressed whether […]
