“Woke” refers to being alert to injustice, and specifically racism, in society. When people disparage wokeness, I want to be charitable and assume that they do not disparage alertness to injustice/racism per se but rather an oversensitivity to it. In other words, like a car alarm that goes off when there is a strong breeze, the “woke” individual’s injustice alarm is poorly calibrated and goes off unnecessarily.
The problem is the critics of wokeness never provide more precision as to what proper alertness to injusticeor racism looks like.When they merely treat such alertness as a punchline, they convey the impression that they are prone to be insensitive to injustice and racism and thus they fall into the equal and opposite error.
