Evangelical critics of progressive Christianity like Mike Winger and Alisa Childers regularly claim that people who become progressive Christians are more likely to become atheists. But most of those who begin to call themselves progressive Christians came out of an conservative evangelical Christianity that they eventually found to be no longer defensible. Like a leaky boat that began to take on water, their evangelical faith could no longer stay afloat. And so, they retreated to a progressive Christian life preserver.
You don’t attack life preservers because, statistically speaking, people who end up needing to use them are more likely to drown than those who never needed them in the first place.
