A friend of mine sent me a link to an article by blogger Matt Walsh about the Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner magazine cover. I hadn’t heard of Matt Walsh before this, but from my very limited exposure, he is a conservative Christian who makes his living blogging about North American culture wars.
In the opening to the article Walsh describes his seething rage at the magazine cover:
“The truth is, I get so sickened and infuriated by this kind of madness that I’d prefer, for my own mental health, to ignore it and write about something else. But there is a war for reality happening right now, and from what I can tell, conservatives have almost entirely abandoned the battlefield.” (source)
I don’t know all the things that sicken and infuriate Matt Walsh. In my experience, however, social conservatives (presumably a large segment of Walsh’s audience) tend to become angrier about male homosexuals, transvestites and/or transsexuals than any other topic and that includes really horrible things like child exploitation, slavery, rape, racism, income disparity, systemic economic corruption, and countless other topics.
On the one hand, I am inclined to judge the social conservative for this apportioning of moral outrage given that issues like child exploitation, slavery, rape, racism, income disparity, systemic economic corruption, and countless other topics are as worthy of moral outrage as anything.
On the other hand, I must concede that in my day to day life I am more inclined to become enraged about being cut off in traffic or dealing with a rude waiter than issues like child exploitation, slavery, rape, racism, income disparity, or systemic economic corruption.
Darn it! Once again my attempt to judge somebody else has resulted in an indictment of my own moral hypocrisy.
