This afternoon I was in Rexall Drugstore when I discovered that Burt’s Bees was on sale … for 3 cents off. (Kudos to my daughter for being the first to spot this lip-smacking deal.)
Now as a general rule of thumb, I believe that stores should not bother advertising discounts of less than 1%, particularly when the savings are negligible.
In other words, a .5% discount on that multi-million dollar vacation home you want to purchase in Aspen is better than no discount at all. But 3 cents off lip balm? Meh.
In fairness to Rexall, Canada has eliminated the penny, so the real world original price was $4.50 while the real world discount is a solid nickel.
In other words, the discount does exceed my 1%.
So I guess I’ll hold off on calling this a marketing fail.
And that’s my two cents.
