Today I was copied an email that John Loftus sent to our contact at Baker. In the email John requested that the blurbs for God or Godless be prominently displayed at Amazon.com. John explained, “That way, if no-name idiots unfavorably reviews [sic] them they will be seen disagreeing with credentialed scholars who say otherwise.”
This is how I replied:
Certainly I agree with the prominent display of the blurbs, though an uncouth barbarian will hardly care that they’re disagreeing with “credentialed scholars”! That’d be like informing a twelve year old girl that renowned music critic Robert Christgau panned the new Justin Bieber album. You think she cares? 🙂
The irony is that John’s blog is to the village atheist what a warm puddle is to mosquito larvae. So there will be no shortage of fanboys (and fangals) of “Debunking Christianity” who will be only too eager to give the poor Tentative Apologist what for.
A book like this will certainly be an effective means to illustrate individual confirmation biases. Despite the fact that I present a rigorous, accessible and humorous progressive defense of core theistic and Christian conviction and John presents a gloves-off make-it-up-as-you-go-along atheistic pragmatism, and despite the fact that these voices together provide an effective introduction to a wide range of debates on the perennial question of God, there will be some people who lampoon the whole exercise out of sheer enmity for one of the two authors.
