A few months ago I wrote a song which encompasses an entire apologetics education in six verses. (Okay, that may be a bit of a stretch. But at least you get arguments for theism, Christianity, and defeaters of defeaters inside of five minutes.) Ever since, I have been intending to record it and upload the mp3 to the site (think of Weird Al Yankovic without the humor). But life being what it is I suspect I won’t get around to doing that for awhile yet. (It’s probably just as well. This way I retain my dignity, or at least what is left of it.) So here, at least, are the lyrics.
Drum roll please!
The Apologetics Song
When I became a Christian I didn’t want to get things wrong
So I set out to write the apologetics song.
Explore through words and music the reasons to believe
The evidence for Christianity
I started with existence. Why does anything exist at all?
If everything’s contingent where does the chain of causes end?
You’ve got to invoke necessity , a necessary agent cause
Or I’m tellin’ you you’re left up around the bend.
Next I turned to cosmic fine-tuning. Why is this universe tuned for life?
Did we just win the cosmic lottery?
Twenty-five factors precisely balanced on the point of a knife
A cosmos clearly designed for you and me
And then there is morality: what makes something wrong or right?
Is it biology or society?
But good and evil are objective, our moral intuitions shine bright
And it certainly doesn’t depend on you and me
But that’s just mere theism, can something more be said?
Is there a sign of the truth of Christianity?
Historical resurrection, God raised Jesus from the dead
A historical case can be made for that belief
Yet what about suffering, the horrors that men do
and the natural evil that makes creation groan?
Could God be giving space for creaturely free will
and bringing about greater goods than the world has known?
But isn’t faith irrational, belief in what you can’t see?
How can you put reason on the shelf?
The fact is faith goes with knowledge, to know you must believe
Reasoned faith is a sign of mental health
