As I noted last time, Thom Stark concludes his acknowledgements with the following: “After having written a book about the nature of the knowledge of God, I can safely say that the only thing I know for certain is that I love my ladies.” (xx) I mentioned Aaron Neville with respect to this (“Don’t Know Much”) but I kinda wished I’d referenced Bad English’s “When I See You Smile”. Although not quite as lyrically relevant, it comes close and is a much better song.
Anyway, here’s the real question: is it posible for a theologian to be more certain of his love for his girls than for any theological claim? Here’s the answer: sure. A theologian can labor all day in his study attempting to understand Aquinas’ account of the processions and drive home not sure what he believes anymore. Is Aquinas correct? Is God really a Trinity? Does God really exist? Is the concept of God even coherent? Questions, doubts, and convictions of varying degrees may swirl in his mind on any given evening.
But then he opens up the front door and …
“Daddy!!!”
