On not being a jerk about it

February 1, 2011 by Randal

This happens to be one of my favorite Bizarro cartoons. It handily raises the question each one of us needs to be asking: would I rather be good or right? Of course all things considered it is better to be both/and, but if you had to choose, which would you opt for? Would you rather be a super kind and generous person who is wrong on some pretty big issues? Or would you rather get those issues right and be-a-jerk-about-it?

Here’s another question: based on the life and teachings of Jesus how do you think he would answer? Would he advise his flock that being right is most important or being good wins the day?

Oh, and don’t say this is a false dichotomy. It isn’t. You see, we know many people who are jerks but they’re right, and others who are good but they’re wrong. If you had to choose which of those to be, which one would you choose?
